Unemployment tax refunds

The IRS sent has sent out an initial batch of refunds for single files who paid income tax on jobless benefits collected in 2020. A second batch of refund for single files is expected in Mid to Late June 2021; the exact timeline is unclear.

Refunds started going out in May and will go out in batches through the summer as the agency evaluates tax returns. More complicated returns could take longer to process.

The IRS is doing the recalculations in two phases, starting with single filers, then working on married-filing-jointly (MFJ) filers. If the exclusion makes you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return, you will need an amended tax return.
